The system lets people set up pages for events organised by BHF itself as well as for an event they have organised themselves. Registered users who are taking part in more than one event also have the option of setting up a different page for each activity.BHF Online Manager Bertrand Bosrédon said: “The take up of this new service has been incredible, with more than 1,200 fundraisers creating a sponsorship page so far.”While hundreds of charities have set up online sponsorship tools using the off-the-shelf packages from suppliers such as Justgiving and Bmycharity, BHF show that it is possible to create such tools in-house. Other charities which have developed their own in-house systems include Action Medical Research and Crisis. British Heart Foundation’s in-house online sponsorship system has helped increase the charity’s online income from £500 to £1,500 per day since January 2004.The system is designed to allow supporters to set up their own Web page on the BHF site and both promote their sponsored event and handle secure credit/debit card donations. It includes a Gift Aid declaration for those making online donations or pledges. The sponsorship pages alone account for more than £1,000 of this new average daily total.Supporters can create their own sponsorship page, either by using one of 12 standard pages or personalising it with their own pictures and text. Prospective sponsors can visit the BHF site, find the page of their friend, colleague or relative, and make a donation with a credit or debit card.
